Best Handheld GPS for Hiking in 2026 — Don't Overpay
If I had to spend my own money today, I’d buy the Garmin eTrex SE. No question. It’s the right mix of price, battery life, and simplicity for most hikers. I’ve owned three different Garmins over the years, and this is the one I keep grabbing.
The eTrex SE runs on two AA batteries, which is huge. I’ve been on trips where my buddy’s fancy rechargeable unit died on day two, and he was stuck carrying a dead brick. I just swapped in fresh AAs and kept moving. The screen is small but sharp, and it’s readable in direct sunlight. That matters more than you think. I’ve used it on day hikes and overnighters, and it’s never let me down.
The one thing I hate? No onboard maps. You gotta load them through a computer first, which is annoying. It took me a solid hour to figure out the software. But once it’s loaded, it just works. I’ve stopped caring about the setup because the payoff is worth it.

But it’s heavy, the touchscreen sucks with wet fingers, and the subscription adds up. I would not buy the GPSMAP 66i though — it’s the worst of both worlds. Older tech, same high price, and no real advantage over the 67i. I wouldn’t touch it.
Honestly, I see people drop $600 on the 67i and then only use it for step tracking. That’s a waste. If you’re sticking to marked trails and weekend trips, you don’t need the satellite stuff. You just need something reliable that won’t die on you.
